PROTON has taken a major step towards local electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing with the groundbreaking of its first dedicated EV production plant at the high-tech Tanjung Malim facility. This strategic move aligns with Malaysia’s vision for EV industrialization and positions Proton as a key player in the growing electric vehicle market.
The new Proton EV assembly plant, set for completion by the end of 2025, represents an RM82 million investment and will have an initial production capacity of 20,000 EVs per year. The facility will manufacture multiple EV models based on the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform, starting with the much-anticipated Proton e.MAS 7—the first fully electric model from a Malaysian automotive brand.

Located within the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV), Proton’s EV facility is designed to boost Malaysia’s EV adoption and support the country’s low-carbon mobility goals. The project is aligned with key national policies such as the National Automotive Policy (NAP 2020), New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP), and the New Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Smart Manufacturing for Next-Gen EVs
The state-of-the-art EV production line will leverage:
✅ Automation & Robotics – Enhancing efficiency and precision
✅ Cloud-Based Plant Management – Real-time monitoring for optimized operations
✅ Industrial IoT (Internet of Things) – Data-driven decision-making
✅ IR 4.0 Technologies – Advanced manufacturing for high-quality output
These smart manufacturing technologies will ensure efficient production, reduced environmental impact, and world-class quality in Proton’s new energy vehicles (NEV).

Job Creation & Future Expansion
Beyond innovation, Proton’s EV facility will create over 200 new jobs in EV industrialization and technical services, boosting employment and skill development in Malaysia. As EV demand grows, Proton has a phase two expansion plan to increase production capacity to 45,000 units annually, catering to both Malaysian and international markets.
Proton Leads Malaysia’s EV Revolution
With the launch of its first homegrown EV production plant, Proton is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mobility, local EV production, and future-ready automotive technology. As EV adoption rises, Proton is set to accelerate Malaysia’s journey towards a cleaner, smarter, and electrified future.
