GWM Haval H6 Hybrid Review: This is what we call “Value for Money”

GWM Haval H6 Hybrid

Launched last October, the GWM Haval H6 Hybrid has made a strong entry into the Malaysian automotive scene, finding more than 1,000 homes within just two months of its unveiling.

With a focus on hybrid efficiency, this mid-sized SUV competes directly with models like the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, Honda HR-V Hybrid, and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Hybrid in terms of the powertrain and pricing. However, if we look only at the size, it is actually in the same category as the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5.

So, if you’re considering a hybrid SUV in Malaysia, here’s a closer look at how the H6 Hybrid stacks up against its rivals.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the hood, the GWM Haval H6 Hybrid features a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 243 horsepower and 530 Nm of torque.

This powertrain offers more punch than several of its competitors, such as the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid (122 hp) and Honda HR-V Hybrid (131 hp). With this robust combination, the H6 Hybrid delivers a dynamic and engaging driving experience, making it a standout in terms of driving excitement in the hybrid SUV segment.

In real-world driving, the Haval H6 Hybrid was smoother than expected, handling both urban traffic and highways comfortably. Its high torque output ensures effortless acceleration, especially during overtaking maneuvers.

However, since there is a lot of torque available upon request, one must be careful while pressing the accelerator pedal as the power delivery can be quite intense when you floor it.

In all, the Haval H6 Hybrid is certainly superior to its competitors in terms of sheer straight-line speed but it is nowhere near the Japanese and the Europeans when it comes to delivering a composed and engaging driving experience, no thanks to the light steering and the body roll.

Interior Quality and Comfort

Step inside the Haval H6 Hybrid, and you’ll find a modern and well-appointed cabin. The SUV features premium materials, including leather upholstery, a spacious layout, and a well-designed dashboard.

The 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and panoramic sunroof add a touch of luxury, and the spacious cabin ensures that passengers will find plenty of legroom and headspace, making long trips more comfortable.

It is safe to say that the Haval H6 Hybrid’s cabin is a very comfortable and visually appealing place to be in, making it ideal for road trips and also day-to-day commuting.

Technology and Features

In addition to the large 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, there is a suite of driver-assistance features. These include lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking, making it a great tech-centric choice for hybrid SUV buyers.

While Japanese hybrid SUVs offer the same essential features, the infotainment systems are somewhat less intuitive. Like most models from China at the moment, the level of interface customization and modern appeal found in the Haval H6 is just mighty impressive.

Fuel Efficiency

When it comes to fuel economy, hybrid models are known for their efficiency, and the GWM Haval H6 Hybrid is no exception. It achieves a fuel consumption rate of around 5.5–6.0 L/100 km, which is quite impressive for a hybrid SUV of its size and engine capacity.

To put things into perspective, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid outperforms the H6 in terms of fuel efficiency, offering approximately 4.3 L/100 km, making it one of the most fuel-efficient hybrid SUVs in Malaysia.

Despite this, the Haval H6 Hybrid is still a great option if you prioritize performance without sacrificing too much on fuel economy. The Honda HR-V Hybrid offers similar fuel efficiency but falls short in terms of performance when compared to the H6.

Pricing and Value

When comparing value for money, the Haval H6 Hybrid priced at RM139,800 wins big as it offers a powerful engine and plenty of standard features for the price, making it a strong contender in its segment.

Take the list of safety and driver assistance features for instance – you get six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and a variety of advanced safety technologies such as lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.

While similarly-priced Japanese hybrid SUVs also come with a full suite of safety features, they lack some of the more advanced ADAS systems found in the H6.

There is no denying that the GWM Haval H6 Hybrid is a strong option in the hybrid SUV market in Malaysia, offering a great mix of performance, advanced technology, and value for money.
