In addition to the EX90 flagship EV, Volvo Cars Malaysia today also took the wraps off the new and enhanced 2025 Volvo XC90 SUV which brings a host of design enhancements and technology updates that further elevate this acclaimed seven-seater plug-in hybrid.

Design & Technology Updates

Drawing inspiration from Volvo’s latest electric vehicle lineup, the updated XC90 sports a refreshed exterior and an upgraded user interface. Notable changes include a redesigned cabin, larger central display, improved suspension, premium interior materials, and enhanced insulation for a more serene ride.

The new XC90 is available with two drivetrain options – the T8 plug-in hybrid and the B5 mild hybrid – both powered by a 2.0-litre engine and paired with an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, delivering power to all four wheels. The T8 variant produces a combined 462 hp and 709 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds while achieving fuel consumption as low as 1.8L/100km. The B5 offers 263 hp and 390 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.

Top-Spec Features in Malaysia

In Malaysia, both XC90 models are offered in the Ultra trim, boasting a suite of premium features. These include an 11.2-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, head-up display, next-gen Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, powered and ventilated front seats with memory and lumbar support, a panoramic sunroof, and four-zone climate control.

Customers can choose from four exterior colors: Onyx Black, Denim Blue, Crystal White, and Vapour Grey, each complemented by a Charcoal interior with ventilated Nappa leather seats and Grey Ash wood trim.

Pricing remains unchanged from the previous model year:

  • XC90 Ultra T8: RM434,888
  • XC90 Ultra B5: RM418,888

Each purchase includes a five-year digital services subscription, 24/7 roadside assistance, and an unlimited mileage warranty. The high-voltage battery comes with an eight-year warranty.

Updated Styling and Interior Experience

This marks the XC90’s most significant facelift, introducing a more dynamic front end with redesigned air intakes, slimmer headlights, a sculpted bonnet, and refreshed bumpers and fenders. Inside, the dashboard now spans a more horizontal layout, adorned with textured, high-quality materials and vertically aligned air vents for a cleaner look.

Interior functionality has also improved, featuring more storage options and a dedicated wireless charging pad. Ambient lighting adds to the premium experience, especially during nighttime driving.

Performance and Efficiency

The XC90 T8 delivers up to 77 km of pure electric driving based on WLTP standards, enabling most daily trips to be completed emission-free. Data from Volvo indicates that nearly half of the distance driven in recent plug-in hybrid models is on electric power alone. For extended journeys, the hybrid setup seamlessly combines electric and petrol power for a total range exceeding 800 km.

The B5 mild hybrid uses a 48-volt system with a starter-generator to support the petrol engine, improving efficiency and reducing emissions by up to 15%. Enhancements to its combustion cycle also result in better fuel economy and lower CO₂ emissions.

Smarter User Interface

Inside, drivers will find an upgraded 11.2-inch touchscreen with 21% improved pixel clarity. This system supports Volvo’s latest infotainment interface, also used in the all-electric EX90. Frequently used apps like navigation and media are easily accessible, reducing the need for multiple taps.

The interface also adapts to driver habits, offering smart shortcuts based on current driving scenarios. For instance, the 360-degree camera may appear when parking, or music apps when charging. On the Ultra T8 variant, a new “Drive Modes” menu allows for quick selection between Pure, Hybrid, and Performance driving modes.

Comfort and Audio Excellence

Built with class-leading ride comfort in mind, the XC90 comes equipped with an adaptive air suspension system on all four wheels. This system continuously adjusts to road and driving conditions, maintaining an optimal ride height and smooth performance.

It can lower the vehicle by 20 mm for better stability at high speeds or raise it by 40 mm for tackling rough terrain. The cabin is also noticeably quieter thanks to better sound insulation and advanced damping technology, making it the perfect environment for the high-fidelity Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

This 19-speaker setup replicates acoustics of various environments, such as a concert hall or jazz club, providing an immersive listening experience.

Uncompromising Safety

True to Volvo’s legacy, the XC90 is engineered with safety as a top priority. It includes a reinforced safety cell and Volvo’s full Safe Space Technology suite. Advanced driver-assistance features like Pilot Assist, lane-keeping, and autonomous emergency braking come standard, contributing to its five-star Euro NCAP and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ ratings.
